How can science be used to relieve the humanitarian crisis in Iraq?
In September, we started a project in class that was aimed to answer the question "How can science be used to relieve the humanitarian crisis in Iraq?" Over the course of several months, we learned about motion, velocity, and force to help find ways to aid the Yazidi people in the form of air drops. We tested prototypes of air packages in two egg drops, each helping us better understand how a package would actually be damaged when falling. With the data we collected, we were able to determine how air drops could be improved.

Letter to Obama
Dear Mr. President,
In our science class we are learning about the ISIS attack on the Yazidi people in Iraq. We should care about about this humanitarian crisis because the Yazidi are being attacked for no reason other than not believing in the same religion as the rest of their country. 50 years ago we had the same problem as the Yazidi have with civil persecution, and it is not fair for another country to go through the same thing. It is also effecting people in our country, “Many members of the Yazidi community in Lincoln, Nebraska, say they have stopped eating, sleeping, and going to work”(Yazidis in the U.S. and Iraq cling to cell phones) because they are upset with what is happening in Iraq.
“The [U.S.] planes delivered 5,300 gallons of fresh drinking water. They also dropped 8,000 prepackaged meals.”(U.S. military planes bring food, water to Iraq). Although what the U.S. has been doing for the Yazidi people has been helping, there is still more we can do. We could drop more food, water, and medicine, because they do not have even close to enough of it. We could also develop a pill to make the refuges feel full on less food. Additionally, the U.S. can help escort willing refugees to a safer location, away from Mount Sinjar. The U.S. has a lot of power, and it can be used to benefit others in need.
Sincerely,
Emma van Geuns, Andrew Hernandez, Jessey Castillo
